Even with widespread retail banking in place, India’s postal banking service has a large scope due to its connectivity, stressed Communications and IT Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday (October 29). Prasad was inaugurating the Postal Savings Banks Forum in New Delhi, which was organised by World Savings and Retail Banking Institute (WSBI) jointly with the National Savings Organisation (Ministry of Finance) and the Department of Posts. The theme of the forum was “The Rising Force of Postal Banking in the Retail Banking Market”. According to a statement by the Press Information Bureau of India, post offices hold 1.6 billion savings and deposit accounts globally, which is second to commercial banks that hold about 2.5 billion accounts. With 1.50 lakh post offices across the country, India Post has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Indian E-commerce companies Snapdeal and Shopclues, to join hands and propel the e-commerce logistics.   As stated in a release by  iGovernment , on the occasion of Business Development Day on 14th Oct 2014 the department of postal services decided to join hands with the two online marketplaces, to cater to their logistics needs with its wide reach. Keeping in view the enormous growth of the e-commerce sector in the country in recent years, India Post has recently joined hands with the e-retail  giants Flipkart, Snapdeal, Amazon. India Postal Department will soon be delivering products of these online companies in every corner of the nation in the near future. The prospects of collaboration were discussed in a press conference held on Saturday on the occasion of 'mail diwas' during 'National Postal Week'. The machine installed on latest 'Automated Mail Processor Center' was also displayed. Shri John Samuel, Member of the Postal Service Board informed that the Indian Post will soon convert 1.55 lakh post offices of the country to the high-tec 'Parcel hubs' and  an investment of Rs 4.90 crore  is being pitched for this plan. “India Post will play a major role in e-commerce industry and would be using latest machines.
